Eliminating Controller-Based Reverse-Engineering in Chip-Off Data Recovery
Encryption and complex proprietary signal processing algorithms (such as error correction codes) in modern NAND flash controllers makes "chip-off" data recovery a daunting if not impossible task. In this presentation, we explain a novel technique to impact data recovery from NAND in circumstances where the controller is unable to resolve the stored data and we have no understanding of the controller's logic. The approach is to improve the quality of data on the NAND flash before it is processed by the controller by optimally interpreting the distribution of voltage within the NAND flash.
